from BMD PublishingOverview
Panic Away Review - Panic Away is a system developed by Barry Joe McDonagh, with the main goal to eliminate the "fuel" or main driving force behind the disorder before any real progress can be made. Since this is the main goal, you'd think that Barry would have put more effort into focusing on this. Instead, I found that he was a little all over the place, and there were some points where he didn't even refer back to this fuel. So overall, that made it confusing at times for me. I thought he made some good points otherwise, however, what really could have made his system great would have been really driving that point home. That would have made it a truly unique approach.
You're probably wondering if it will work as is, though. In my experience, aside from the casual mention from time to time of this "fuel," there's really nothing in here that you haven't read somewhere else before. Sure, Barry's One Move Technique sounds fancy, but in reality it's a very basic tactic that has been recommended by health care professionals and books (and now websites) for many years.
So basically what you get is Mr. McDonagh throwing fancy names on different techniques, possibly adding a little spin of his own, and passing it off as a new and exciting technique. I don't think you'll find this very useful, especially if you've been struggling with anxiety for a long time now. In fact, if you have been having any sort of panic related feelings (OCD, depression, separation anxiety, ect) for a while now, and actively been trying to rid yourself of them, there is a very good chance that you'll know most of the stuff present in Barry's guide.
I feel like I should also mention that you get coaching included in the program, though this turns out to be simply e-mail and forum support. It can be useful I guess, but as it turns out there really isn't much revolutionary or ground breaking about the support, either. Basically, the support team is trained to mention the techniques listed in the book, and if that doesn't work they'll try to explain it better. Good concept, just poor execution.
The Short Version
What you will like about Panic Away:
- Straightforward techniques
- Not a long guide
- Good for someone that might just want to understand the disorder better
- Forum access is also provided
- Not anything new or revolutionary
- Doesn't give enough information about his special fuel
- Very broad and general advice sometimes
