Panic Attacks During Sleep

Panic attacks during sleep are actually a lot more common than you'd think. In fact, the majority of people that suffer from any sort of related disorder will encounter them at one point or another. The thing is, though, that these attacks that happen at night can be very scary. It's understandable why anyone would much rather deal with one in the day.

Considering the fact that the night already scares a lot of people with anxiety disorders, this is not a very good combination. This causes people to get extremely scared that something horrible will happen to them in the night (like a stroke or heart attack). They are afraid they will die during the night. What a horrible way to end every day. Most people are so relieved and delighted to go to sleep that they can't even imagine what it would be like to dread the time.

It isn't fair that some people have to deal with this.

One good thing to understand is that dreams don't really play a role in this whole process. This should be somewhat of a relief because dreams are very hard, if not impossible, to control, and worrying about them will only make things worse. So the fact that they don't play a part in the panic is good news.

And while experts are positive that dreams aren't at fault here, they aren't sure what is unfortunately. The general consensus, though, is that what goes on during the day plays a role in the attacks. That's why it's so important that you take action now and start cutting off the panic at the source. There's not a whole lot you can do while you sleep, but you can fight it during the day.

As for infants and children, it can be hard to determine what is going on sometimes. They too can suffer from panic attacks at night, though they also have another disorder called pavor nocturnus. It shows all the same symptoms of typical anxiety, such as heart palpitations and sweating. Though it happens at a different phase of sleep than normal panic attacks, it still is out of the range of dreams.

In the end though, it's so important to do something about the disorder as soon as possible, whether it's for you or for a loved one. If you get to the core of the problem, you can be free and enjoy sleep once again.
